There’s a reason why we consistently recommend the Brooks Ghost 16: it delivers comfort and support, is versatile and consistently a top performer when we put it to the test. This pair of sneakers earned the top spot in our best walking shoes roundup and it’s our pick for best lightweight walking shoe for people with diabetes. And thanks to Amazon Prime Day, it’s on sale.
The Ghost 16 is also the go-to walking and running shoe for multiple EatingWell editors—and it’s podiatrist-approved. So while Brooks offers so many great walking and running options, the Ghost 16 remains a top pick for us.

The Brooks Ghost 16 is a lightweight shoe—the upper is made of nylon and the entire body only weighs 8.5 ounces. The rubber sole and “moderate” cushioning deliver excellent support. Both of these aspects make it a versatile shoe for both everyday wear and high-impact activities like running. It has a neutral, cushioned design (great for your arches and heels!), which podiatrists say helps maintain joint alignment, reduces fatigue and enhances mobility.

The upper is soft, the laces are adjustable and we found it to be comfortable right out of the box—no breaking in required. The shoe comes in a wide range of sizes (5 to 13) and widths (narrow, medium, wide, x-wide), making it accessible for a variety of foot shapes. That being said, not all colorways are available in every width. We’ve found that the Ghost tends to run about a half-size small, so you might want to size up, especially if you’ll need extra toe room for running or another activity that causes your foot to swell.
Don’t just take our word on this shoe: The Ghost 16 has the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) Seal of Acceptance, which means podiatrists approved it as a shoe that promotes good foot health. It’s also PDAC A5500 Diabetic certified, which means it may qualify for Medicare reimbursement—aka your health insurance might cover your shoe purchase.
