Chilly Feet May Be Early Sign of Varicose Veins

Consistently chilly feet, especially when combined with a feeling of heaviness in the legs, could be an overlooked sign of varicose veins, new research finds.

Varicose veins are swollen, bulging veins that usually occur in the legs and can be visible just beneath the skin.

Varicose veins develop when valves in larger veins become “leaky,” called venous reflux, and don’t function as well to bring blood in and out of smaller veins in the legs. As a result, blood pools in the legs, says Kenneth Nakazawa, MD, a vascular surgeon at NYC Health + Hospitals Metropolitan in New York City.

“Most varicose veins are harmless,” he says. “Not every case of varicose veins needs treatment, but it is something that benefits people with severe symptoms.”

Varicose Veins Not Always Obvious in the Beginning

The new study, published in the journal Open Heart, used data on more than 8,700 adults ages 30 to 70 who were part of the Taiwan Biobank database. People filled out questionnaires that asked them if they had varicose veins, were sensitive to cold, or had sensations of heaviness in their legs.
