Exercise May Dramatically Reduce Colon Cancer Recurrence Risk, Study Finds

For people with high-risk stage 2 and stage 3 colorectal cancer, a structured exercise program can dramatically lower the risk of recurrence, new cancers developing, and death after surgery and chemotherapy, according to trial results published this week in The New England Journal of Medicine.

While several observational studies have demonstrated the anti-cancer benefits of exercise, this first-of-its-kind international trial provides more definitive, high-level evidence that consistent physical activity can keep colorectal cancer from coming back.

“As oncologists, one of the most common questions we get asked by patients is: ‘What else can I do to improve my outcome?’” said lead study author Christopher Booth, MD, director of the division of cancer care at Queen’s University’s Cancer Research Institute in Kingston, Canada, in a press release.

“These results now provide us with a clear answer: An exercise program that includes a personal trainer will reduce the risk of recurrent or new cancer, make you feel better, and help you live longer,” Dr. Booth said.
