Approximately 18,792 pounds of ready-to-eat sausage, sliced meat and poultry products have been recalled. Smith Packing, LLC, reported that the products contain sodium nitrite levels that exceed the regulatory limit.

The recall was initiated after the company received complaints from consumers that the products had an unusual taste and color. The impacted items were produced between February 19 and April 24, 2025 and distributed to institutional and retail locations in New York. You can find a full list of the impacted products here. The products have sell-by dates of either April 28 or June 12, 2025.

Sodium nitrite is a common preservative in processed meat, but having too much in a single sitting may result in hospitalizations or even death in severe cases. If you have purchased any of the listed products, you are advised to dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase. Restaurants and other establishments are also urged to discontinue using these products and to discard them or return them as well.
