Billy Joel Has a Brain Disorder — What Is It and Is It Serious?

The superstar singer-songwriter Billy Joel, a “Piano Man” known for decades of iconic hits like “Uptown Girl,” “She’s Always a Woman,” and “Big Shot,” has been diagnosed with a rare brain condition called normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH).

NPH happens when there is a buildup inside the skull of cerebrospinal fluid — a clear, colorless liquid that flows in and around the brain and spinal cord.

NPH can cause problems with walking, memory, balance, and bladder control.

The disorder, which mostly affects adults older than 65, led the 76-year-old artist to cancel his upcoming concerts.

“This condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance,” stated a press release. Under his doctor’s instructions, Joel is “undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period.”
